Orbital Park: 'Someone will be killed'

A warning of a possible fatality has come as angry commuters reach boiling point over parked lorries at Orbital Park.

Businessman Geoffrey Fletcher said: “On occasions over recent months frustrations have overflowed leading to threats of violence as well as a number of increasingly serious accidents.

“Sooner or later there will be a very serious accident there and someone will be killed.”

Mr Fletcher, deputy managing director of car and garden machinery dealers Drake and Fletcher, said operating a company at Orbital Park had now become “untenable” with customers trying to get to them turning away.

He made his comments about clashes between drivers and truckers at a meeting of Ashford’s joint transporation board.

Afterwards he said: “The people affected have been those trying to get in to work on the business park and people in South Willesborough unable to get out of their homes.

“There have been a couple of face-ups and some drivers have been sounding their horns at 8am to wake up the lorry drivers.”

Lorry drivers park illegally overnight in the business park and in nearby South Willesborough.

Mr Fletcher told councillors: “I must emphasise the urgency of dealing with this menace. Operating a business in Orbital Park has become unsustainable.

“On several occasions we have been unable to gain access to our own businesses.

“Some customers have given up the struggle and gone home.”

Mr Fletcher said that some years ago signs forbidding overnight lorry parking were put up but were not enforced.

Councillors agreed both to press on with plans to put down more double yellow lines and look into making Monument Way one way.

Board chairman and county councillor Elizabeth Tweed said: “This has been a running sore for a very long time.

“I think everybody is fed up with the situation."
