Maidstone United's miserable start to the Ryman League Premier Division season got even worse on Saturday when they lost 1-0 at home to bottom-of-the-table Horsham.

The Stones could have suffered a heavier defeat but for the good work of goalkeeper Andy Walker, but even he was unable to stop Mark Knee's 40-yard wind-assisted free kick from hitting the net with 18 minutes gone.

Chatham Town ended a run of three straight defeats in Ryman League Division 1 South with an eventful 3-2 home win over Walton & Hersham, but they had to come from behind twice to achieve it.

Joe Fuller missed a 15th-minute penalty for the Chats before Bernard Asanti gave Walton the lead minutes later, but Jason Barton pulled Chatham level before the break.

The visitors took the lead again after 57 minutes through Kenny Ojukwu and although Chatham again equalised three minutes later through Fuller, their task was made harder when Kevin Watson received a second yellow card and was sent off.

However, it was the Chats who snatched the winner nine minutes from time when Nick Hegley converted a Uche Ibemere pass.

Sittingbourne moved fourth in Division 1 South after their 2-0 success at Ramsgate - their fourth win in a row.

A superb solo effort by Joe Horlock set them on their way after half an hour, and then Ryan Golding tapped home into an empty net midway through the second half after Paul Semakula had rounded Rams keeper Alex Krunic.

In the same division, Faversham fell to a 3-0 defeat at Leatherhead as the home side took over top place in the table with goals by Tommy Hutchings, Greg Andrews and Marc Elston.
