Welling boss Jamie Day has vowed to get the best out of returning forward Loick Pires.

The 23-year-old returned to Park View Road on a free transfer on Tuesday, a year after joining Woking for an undisclosed fee.

Pires' return among the fans is sure to divide opinion but Day is looking forward to working with Pires again.

"I had no problem with Loick leaving when he did as he was trying to progress," said Day.

"He does divide people but it's about what I think - and I think he will improve our squad.

"We all know what he can do and it's down to me to get him as good as he possibly can be.

"On his day, Loick is a match-winner. He scored one goal in every three games when he was here before and I felt he got better as time went on.

"He is a player I enjoyed working with and for whatever reason it didn't work out for him last season."

Day also revealed that he is in talks with up to 10 players, including many of last season's title-winning squad.

"We let a few go, who were good lads, but we need to move on and try to get a new squad together," said Day.

"We're also looking to bring in a centre-back and we're hoping to get a midfielder tied up in the next couple of weeks."

Day has already signed striker Kurtis Guthrie and midfielder Jake Gallagher to new deals for next season.
