Relegation not a certainty for Sheppey

Head coach Frank Davis is still unsure on club's future

Sheppey could be saved from the drop due to a reorganisation of lower league rugby.

The Island side currently occupy one of the relegation spots in Kent 1 and suffered a heavy defeat on Saturday but they could still be playing at the same level next season.

Just three wins have come Sheppey’s way this season but head coach Frank Davis believes if they do get a reprieve they will come back stronger.

“It’s never clear and it’s the only sport I know where you enter it without ever knowing what you are doing,” said Davis.

“We’ll take whatever comes at us on the chin.

“I don’t think we will struggle next year (if we stay up). The players are fully aware of what they need to do. The break will do them good and they’ll return with a refreshed attitude.

“We haven’t been stuffed beyond our wildest dreams this season and we’ve competed against the big guns. We would have a lot better season. We have beaten people and we’ve come close against some top teams.”

The league have yet to decide whether none, one, two or even three teams suffer relegation when the season ends in a fortnight. If they do go down, Davis won’t be overly worried.

“It won’t be a major issue if we go down as we’ll carry on building the club for the future and I’m not too bothered either way,” he said.

Brad Box scored Sheppey’s only points in a 46-3 defeat at Dartfordians, in their penultimate game of the season on Saturday.

“It was disappointing and there was a lack of desire,” he said.

“The young senior players of the squad never performed all game.

“We lacked desire and intensity. We just didn’t perform at all and it wasn’t just one player, it was about 12 of them.”

Davis did single out left wing Dave Marsden for praise as well as 17-year-old debutant Jamie Evans.

“Jamie ran at people and had an impact but the tried and tested players weren’t there,” said Davis.

“It’s about consistency and without that we can’t build anything. One week we are world beaters and the next we can’t do anything.”
