Maidstone United midfielder James Rogers chasing a sixth promotion in nine seasons

James Rogers wants one more crack at the National League as he bids to add to one of the most impressive records in English football.

Midfielder Rogers is going for his sixth promotion in nine seasons when Maidstone meet Ebbsfleet in the National South play-off final today (Saturday, 3pm)

He’s tasted success with Dover, Dartford and Stones over the years.

Most recently, he was on the bench when Whites won at Fleet in the play-off final in 2014.

Rogers joined Maidstone weeks later, unable to commit to all the travelling in the top flight.

But things have changed.

He said: “I want to stay. I want to give it another shot in the Conference.

“I’m 31 now, coming on 32, so one more go would be quite nice. The travelling wasn’t ideal at the time but now I’m more settled in my life and I’m ready to give it a go if the club need me.”

Few players - if any - can match Rogers’ CV when it comes to winning promotion.

He’s a man for the big occasion and is set to be key player at Stonebridge Road.

Rogers said: “I can’t get my head round all the promotions.

“I’ve had a bit of luck with the teams I’ve played for but it can’t all be down to luck because it wouldn’t keep happening. I’m obviously doing something right.

“It’s been a strange season because I wasn’t in the side at the start but I’ve come back into it and managed to keep my spot.

“Last year was good as well, winning the Ryman League, but these play-offs are a different kettle of fish.

“Everyone’s got to concentrate at all times, otherwise you get hit on the break and that’s it – gone.

“You can’t take too many risks. You can’t go playing balls into midfield and risk getting caught and them breaking."
