Staff at a Kent hospital were looking at a mixed bag of findings following a Healthcare Commission report into hygiene standards.

Fifty-one trusts across England were examined by the Healthcare Commission, with hygiene top of the agenda.

Medway Maritime Hospital in Gillingham was the only Kent hospital to be visited by the Commission, but others in the county will be inspected later

At Medway, 10 of the 15 NHS hygiene standards were met.

But three of the codes were breached, meaning standards were not met during the unannounced spot check.

According to the report, insufficient evidence was either provided by the trust or collected by the Commisssion to draw a conclusion on the other two standards.

Inspectors from the Healthcare Commission visited in March this year, spending two days at the hospital.

The Healthcare Commission inspectors concluded that:

That three codes breached meant not all staff were fully trained in the prevention and control of infections,

That not all premises which provided healthcare were suitable for purpose, kept clean and in good physical repair and condition,

That in some areas there was inadequate " provision of suitable hand wash facilities and antibacterial hand rubs."

But Linda Dempster, head of infection control at the Medway hospital, said the hospital was already aware of the issues raised.

She said: "Every member of staff has to undertake an annual update in infection prevention and control and when the commission came to inspect us, 89 per cent of staff had undertaken the training, which we were proud of, but clearly it was not 100 per cent."

Ms Dempster said the hospital was expecting the Healthcare Commission's next annual report some time between January and March.
